3:19What is Nicomachean Ethics about?
Aristotle's lectures on how to live ask what the highest human good is and answer eudaimonia, flourishing: a whole life of activity in accordance with virtue. Virtue is a habit, not a feeling, found at the mean between excess and deficiency, acquired by practice, guided by practical wisdom, and completed by friendship and contemplation. It is the founding text of virtue ethics.

Virtue As Habit
We become just by doing just acts, brave by doing brave ones. Character is built the way crafts are learned, through repetition until right action becomes second nature, so moral education is training, not lecturing.
The Golden Mean
Each virtue sits between two vices: courage between cowardice and rashness, generosity between stinginess and waste. The mean is relative to the person and situation, which is why ethics needs judgment, not just rules.
Friendship's Three Kinds
Friendships of utility and pleasure dissolve when the benefit stops. The complete kind, grounded in mutual goodwill for the other's own sake between good people, is rare, slow to form, and essential to a flourishing life.

Is Nicomachean Ethics worth reading?
Yes for anyone serious about ethics or self-improvement, since half of modern character-building advice is Aristotle with the citations removed. But it is lecture notes, dry and technical in stretches, and the discussions of magnificence and Greek social life feel remote. Books 1, 2, 8 and 10 carry the core. A good guide or companion volume genuinely helps.
