What is Eat That Frog about?

Eat That Frog is Brian Tracy's short manual on beating procrastination, named for the advice to do your ugliest, most important task first thing each morning. Across 21 brief techniques, Tracy covers planning on paper, the 80/20 rule, the ABCDE priority method, and single-handling tasks until they are done.

Key ideas from Eat That Frog

Eat the Frog First

Identify the task you are most likely to procrastinate on that also carries the biggest consequences, then start your day with it. Willpower is highest in the morning, and finishing it energizes everything after.

The ABCDE Method

Before starting, label tasks A through E by consequence: A items are must-dos, E items should be eliminated. Never touch a B while an A sits undone. Priority is decided on paper, not by mood.

Single Handling

Once you start your most important task, work on it without switching until complete. Tracy argues that restarting a task repeatedly can multiply the time it takes, while sustained concentration compounds.

Lines worth keeping

  • The task you keep avoiding is usually the one that would change your week.
  • Doing small things first is procrastination wearing a productivity costume.

Is Eat That Frog worth reading?

Skim it in an afternoon, which is honestly its design. The frog metaphor and ABCDE method are the keepers; the other techniques blur together and recycle standard time-management advice with motivational-speaker gloss. Good first productivity book for a chronic procrastinator, redundant if you have read almost anything else in the genre.
